Description:
The clerkship is designed to provide an overview of the most important aspects of obstetrics and gynecology and includes an introduction to the sub-specialty areas of maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and gynecological oncology. The primary objective is to provide students with a basic knowledge of those aspects of the care of women that are essential to future physicians in any specialty. Included is the fundamental clinical information and skills development necessary to care for the pregnant female and female patients with disorders of the reproductive system. Divided between gynecology and obstetrics, the clerkship provides experiences in ambulatory clinics, the operating room, inpatient units, and labor and delivery. One full day each week is devoted to comprehensive lectures. Students are supervised by physician faculty, certified nurse midwives, nursing and other professional staff, and housestaff. The clerkship at MGH fosters - maybe as a consequence of its small size - a close working relationship between students and faculty. The students meet with the clerkship director weekly to provide feedback, discuss cases and address difficulties. Students are evaluated on the basis of their clinical performance as well as their performance on written and oral final examinations.
