Description: The course is planned to acquaint the student with the technical, physiological, and immunological principles underlying the management of both adult and pediatric allograft recipients. The student will participate directly in the care of renal and liver allograft recipients. An introduction to the decision making process of complex clinical situations, including the management of infectious disease will be presented. The course will focus upon the administration of immunosuppression. The student will also be afforded an opportunity to learn the current principles of tissue typing as they apply to transplantation, and the technical aspects of organ donation surgery. Exposure to heart and lung allograft recipient care is also possible.
