Description: The course provides instruction in diseases of the nervous system amenable to surgical treatment, and the care of patients with such disorders. Students will participate in all activities of the Neurosurgical Service at both hospitals. These activities include assisting at surgery, resident and attending staff rounds, weekly outpatient clinics, teaching conferences (neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neuropathology, epilepsy, and neurology) and admission and emergency room workups of patients. They may be asked to present a short seminar on a topic of their choice. Based on the student's interest, he/she will be assigned a mentor at either Children�s Hospital Boston or the Brigham and Women�s Hospital. All students will meet with their mentor on a regular basis to review clinical topics. If time allows, interested students will be allowed to give a ten minute presentation to the entire faculty towards the end of the clerkship on a topic discussed with the mentor. Night call: Every 4th night.
Incorporation of Basic Science Content and Evidence-Based Medicine:
Basic science and evidence-based medicine are addressed not only in the everyday care of the patient, but in the many conferences that the students will attend. Wednesday morning and all day Thursday are dedicated to resident and student education.
Grade Criteria:
Honors with Distinction: The student showed an excellent attitude and a true desire to learn, with an outstanding fund of knowledge and interpersonal skills. Surgical skill were at or above expected level, but are not considered an essential component of the rotation. Honors: The student showed an earnest desire to learn and participate, had an above average fund of knowledge, and got along well with all of the faculty and staff. Satisfactory: The student reliably participates in the rotation, with an average fund of knowledge and a good attitude, with a desire to learn and be part of the team Unsatisfactory: The student does not reliably show up for the rotation, and does not get along well with the patients and the faculty. Serious concerns about honesty, integrity and patient care.
