Advanced Clerkship in Diagnostic Radiology

Prerequisites: HMS Principal Clinical Experience (Core Clinical Clerkships) or equivalent
Offered: Full time for one month. Closed October & December.

Description: The course provides an opportunity for students who, having completed the core clerkship, wish further instruction in specific radiological subspecialty areas. Programs will be individually tailored to students' interests. The student should email to discuss their areas of interest with either Dr. Durfee or Dr. Kwait at least two weeks before the clerkship so that arrangements can be made in advance. Sites of interest will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Two special intensive experiences are also offered for students with an interest in interventional radiology: a. Angio-interventional service, where students will work alongside radiologists performing invasive procedures (angioplasty, biliary drainage, central line placement). b. Cross-sectional interventional body imaging where students will be exposed to newer technologies (such as multidetector row CT, 3 Tesla MRI, and 3 dimensional post-processing) as well as image-guided procedures (biopsies, abscess drainages, radiofrequency and/or cryoablations). Students interested in assisting in research projects may also be accommodated with sufficient prior notice.

Confident use of radiology PACS to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the cases seen during observation.
A concise, well-organized, well-researched PowerPoint presentation with well-selected and labeled images and excellent oral delivery of same.
Daily attendance at noon conferences and subspecialty conferences
A complete and accurate digital library, with well-selected images and brief word documentation supporting the major findings and clinical significance.
Enthusiastic comments from supervising staff
Adequate use of radiology PACS to demonstrate most radiologic findings and with a basic knowledge of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the cases).
Reasonably organized final PowerPoint presentation with appropriate radiology focus.
Attendance at majority of radiology noon conferences.
2 quality cases per week submitted to the digital library (total of 8 cases per rotation).
Good staff feedback supporting the student's attendance in the reading room.
Limited ability to use radiology PACS to present some findings relative to the cases seen; rudimentary knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology.
