Maternal/Fetal Medicine

Description: The student will work directly with Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty and fellows, as well as OB-GYN residents rotating on their high-risk rotation. Students will be caring for high-risk pregnant patients, in both ambulatory and in-patient settings. The student will function as a sub-intern on the antepartum service and expected to be fully cognizant and involved in all aspects of patient care. Students will attend a daily high-risk signout where they will be presenting patients to the team, as well as attend at least two formal lectures each week. Students will spend at least one half day per week on the labor floor. Students will rotate in high-risk pregnancy clinics, participating in the care of women with various medical and surgical conditions. Students will be expected to present at a weekly perinatal conference during the last week of their rotation.
Incorporation of Basic Science Content and Evidence-Based Medicine:
Basic science and evidence-based medicine are incorporated into our daily antepartum inpatient rounds, education lectures and are a particular focus of our weekly perinatal conference.
Grade Criteria:
Honors with Distinction: Top 5%-10% of students who've rotated through the elective. Consistent honors with distinction in all categories from all evaluators, in addition, the student is required participate in an academic exercise: a case report, research project, prepare a quality improvement review, protocol development or teaching project. Honors: 80%-90% Consistent honors in all categories from all evaluators, or top 5-10% student without fulfilling the academic exercise Satisfactory: 50%-80% Consistent satisfactory in all categories from all evaluators. Unsatisfactory: Fails to meet the absolute minimum standards expected of a 4th year student with respect to integrity, interpersonal skills, professionalism, communication skills, fund of knowledge, participation and attendance.
