MGH Case-based In-depth Patient Investigations

Description: Student participating in the one month opportunity will investigate and gather relevant information for a complex case that falls outside of traditional diagnostic areas, including interview of the patient and their family/contacts, discussion with clinical team, and review of case with experts in several fields; ability to independently review and critically assess relevant literature; development of creative and innovative approaches to address clinical and basic science questions; capacity for hypothesis generation, preparing and presenting a clear case presentation, and experimental plan to explore hypotheses; engagement in the two four-session continuity clinics during the block; opportunity for write-up of a case series or abstract if the case allows. Students will be evaluated on their engagement with the MGH Pathways patients and expert faculty involved in the case, and clinical team.
Incorporation of Basic Science Content and Evidence-Based Medicine:
In this elective, the focus of the independent study will be on developing and designing tests for scientific hypotheses generated through evaluation of unexplained disease cases seen on the MGH Medical inpatient services. Students will have ongoing contact with the case(s) of interest for a physical exam and history. Students, will meet with basic scientists and other experts to refine their hypotheses and design experiments. Through this exercise, students will extend their understanding of both mechanisms of disease and therapeutics development for patient care. Depending on the case, there may be opportunity to conduct experiments back in the laboratory with patient-derived samples to further test the hypotheses.
Grade Criteria:
Honors with Distinction: Exemplary performance in the above listed elements of evaluation, particularly gaining thorough knowledge of involved cases, independently reading literature critically, working well with all team members, and creatively designing experiments.
Honors: Excels at the above listed elements of evaluation.
Satisfactory: Average performance at the above listed elements of evaluation.
Unsatisfactory: Poor performance at above listed elements of evaluation, particularly if not able to work independently or gain thorough knowledge of cases.
