Clinical Management of the Addictions

Description: Students will participate fully in a comprehensive treatment program for addiction. They will participate in treating patients on an outpatient addictions service and a primary care medical practice. They will visit community treatment resources including a halfway house, methadone clinic and homeless shelter. Students are expected to develop the skills of screening, assessment, brief intervention and relapse prevention. They will develop competence in the treatment of withdrawal and management of pain in patients with addiction. A multidisciplinary faculty exposes students to the medical and psychiatric approaches to addiction. This course is designed to provide a strong foundation in addiction medicine for future physicians in any field. The flexible schedule and multiple resources allow students to pursue their particular interests in addiction medicine.
