Description: Students may add themselves to the waiting list for this course during add/drop periods but not during lottery periods. This clinical elective is designed to acquaint students with rural primary care delivery through the Indian Health Services at the Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico. Students can apply for the four week elective in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics or Family Medicine. The majority of the rotation will be in the outpatient setting, with opportunities for some inpatient and emergency care experience. Students will also be invited to participate in community outreach activities. Students will gain an understanding of how the role of a primary care provider differs in a rural environment as well as the unique cultural, social, economic and political factors that shape health care needs and delivery on the Navajo Nation. Incorporation of Basic Science Content and Evidence-Based Medicine:
The students will be expected to read about their patient's diseases and their management as if they were in any of the primary Boston institutions. Appropriate evidence-based literature will be distributed.
Grade Criteria:
Honors with Distinction: A grade of honors with distinction means the student will consistently surpass expectations of clinical skills and patient management. They will be self-motivated, take an active interest in their patients and their diseases, and work as a team player. Overall outstanding performance. Honors: A grade of honors means the student will often surpass expectations of clinical skills and patient management. Their work is beyond the expectations for their educational level. They will be self-motivated, take an active interest in their patient's and their diseases and work as a team player. Overall excellent performance. Satisfactory: These students function as would be expected of a fourth year medical student in terms of their clinical skills and management decisions. They arrive to the rotation prepared and interested in their patients. Overall average performance. Unsatisfactory: The student did not meet basic expectations with respect to clinical skills and management.
